Layering look with merino wool & silk

Layered look for babies made from organic merino wool and silk by Engel Naturkleidung.

Sometimes, when it's still chilly in the morning, then pleasantly warm at midday and cold again in the evening, then it is the perfect day for the layering look – also known as the ‘onion principle’. Instead of just a single thick layer of clothing, you wear several light layers on top of one another. This makes it easy to adapt your outfit to the weather, temperature and activity. Even on the really cold winter’s days, the layers of merino wool make sure that you stay comfortably warm.

Why merino wool and silk are especially ideal for layering

For the individual layers to work effectively, they should ideally be made of wool or a blend of wool and silk. These natural fibres complement each other, they regulate the temperature, they wick away the moisture from the skin whilst keeping one comfortably warm. A layer of cotton, for example, between the wool layers could impair this function.

Merino wool is particularly well-suited for layering as it is naturally temperature-regulating, breathable and moisture-regulating. It can absorb moisture and release it to the outside, keeps you warm in cold weather and helps maintain a balanced body temperature. Wool & Silk combine the characteristics of merino wool with the light- and softness of silk, making it extra comfortable on the skin. A balanced body temperature is especially important for babies, as they are not able yet to regulate their body temperature on their own.

The 3 layers to work with

The classic layering look consists of three coordinated layers. Each layer with a specific purpose. Together, they ensure an all-round comfortable fit – whether in everyday life, on a walk, at the nursery, at school or out and about in the outdoors.

1. Baselayer

The base layer is worn directly on the skin and is the foundation of the layering look. It provides cosy warmth and creates the ideal base for all other layers. Soft baby bodies, shirts or leggings made from wool or a wool and silk blend are the perfect choice.

2. Midlayer (insulation layer)

The insulation layer is worn on top of the base layer and gives extra warmth. It also helps to wick away moisture from the body. Depending on the temperature and your activity level, you can be flexible with this layer and choose to wear it or leave it.

Tip: Our slightly thicker and buttery soft merino wool and silk collection, the interlock lounge series, is a perfect material for the warm midlayer.

3. Outerlayer

The outer layer protects against wind, cold temperatures and completes the layering look perfectly. Boiled wool or woolfleece are the perfect choice for this layer. For babies, the iconic woolfleece overalls or jackets by ENGEL offer a reliable protection in the pram, in a baby carrier for the first walks together.

How to layer and combine your clothes:

Depending on the weather and your activity, you can mix and match the individual layers flexibly. On mild days, a base layer and an outer layer are often enough. If it gets cooler and you’re outside for a longer time, add a warm mid-layer. This makes it easy to adapt your layered look to the conditions.

Tip: The right accessories complete the layered look. Woolfleece mittens and woolfleece booties keep tiny hands and feet warm. Hats and scarves made from wool fleece or wool and silk complement the layered look and provide extra comfort on chilly days.
