Properly caring for and cleaning woollen garments

Wool is a natural product and should be treated exactly as such: with air, time, and a little care. Because sustainability continues in everyday life — in the care that preserves quality instead of “washing it away.” Whether your clothing is made of wool/silk, wool fleece, or boiled wool: with the right care, your ENGEL woollen garment will stay soft, retain its shape, and remain reliable for a long time.

Cleaning Woollen garments properly

The most important care often happens without any water at all: airing out and brushing. Das reicht im This is surprisingly often enough in everyday life, especially for tops that have only been worn and aren’t really dirty.

Why is wool “self-cleaning”?
Wool fibres are naturally structured in such a way that they absorb dirt and odors less quickly than many other materials. In everyday life, this means:

  • Odors often dissipate simply by airing out the garment.
  • Dry dirt can often be brushed out instead of washed out.

Here’s how to refresh woollen garments (wool, wool fleece, boiled wool):

  • After wearing, hang up and air out, preferably out of direct sunlight outside or by an open window.
  • Once the garment is dry, gently brush it out. For wool fleece, do this regularly to remove lint and pilling.
  • Small bobbles (pilling) can form on wool due to friction and are completely normal. They can be carefully removed with a brush or a lint shaver.
  • • Allow damp garments (rain/snow) to dry completely, before brushing.

Removing Stains from Woollen Garments

Generally, you can wash our woollen garments without any issues by following the proper care instructions. However, this is often not necessary at all. For dried-on stains, here’s what to do: You don’t have to wash the entire garment right away. Often, a spot treatment on the dry stain is sufficient.

Here’s how to remove dried-on stains from wool, wool fleece, or boiled wool:

  • Let it dry completely. This is crucial, as damp spots can often make the problem worse.
  • Please dry the garment flat to preserve its shape and protect the fibres.
  • Once everything is dry: brush it out carefully. We recommend this miracle brush, which gently lifts the fibres.
  • You can very gently remove stubborn residue so that the fibres remain intact.

If a shadow remains afterward, spot treatment is better than a full wash: treat the area locally and gently rather than washing the entire garment unnecessarily.

We advise against using chemical stain removers, as they can damage the delicate wool fibres and cause colour changes.

Storing Woollen Garments Properly

To ensure your woollen garment stays soft, retains its shape, and remains functional for a long time, proper storage is also crucial. With a few simple tricks, you can protect it from moths, moisture damage, and wrinkles:

  • Fold or roll loosely: Hang garments in a well-ventilated area or store them loosely folded or rolled so the fibres can breathe.
  • Natural moth and odour protection: Lavender sachets or cedarwood keep moths away while providing a pleasant scent.
  • Seasonal storage: Store clothing that won’t be worn for a while in a clean, dry, and protected place—for example, in our plastic packaging or airtight boxes. This preserves the fibres and colours.

We often hear from you that our woollen garments are passed down through generations. A wonderful testament to the fact that sustainable care pays off.

Wool, wool fleece, and boiled wool: different materials, same care?

The basic idea is correct: Yes, all three materials benefit from the same gentle care. Air out, brush while dry, wash rarely, and always follow the instructions. That’s the foundation for keeping your favorite ENGEL pieces soft and functional for a long time.
